Water Cooler Games
Water Cooler Games served as the web's primary forum for "videogames with an agenda" — coverage of the uses of video games in advertising, politics, education, and other everyday activities, outside the sphere of entertainment.

The site was maintained at watercoolergames.org from 2003-2009, where it was edited by myself and Gonzalo Frasca. It is now archived here in full.

DDR Extreme Assessment
by Ian Bogost April 5, 2005

Just out today, West Virginia Public Employees Insurance Agency is sponsoring a study on the affects of playing Dance Dance Revolution on "boosting activity" in overweight kids. From the CNN article:

The students, all children of PEIA-covered employees, are required to meet with researchers, play the game a prescribed amount of time, wear a pedometer and maintain a log. They get to keep the game software and pad.

It's nice to see sponsored research on this topic, but... couldn't we write the results right now without doing the study? Presumably the very act of participating in the study would "boost activity" in the test subjects. I think I'll hold out for a longitudinal study, or one comparing the relative impact of DDR on certain kinds of weight loss or exercise.

I think DDR is a fantastic way to have fun and keep fit. I love it! If there were more around, i think it could help stop obesity.
