Water Cooler Games
Water Cooler Games served as the web's primary forum for "videogames with an agenda" — coverage of the uses of video games in advertising, politics, education, and other everyday activities, outside the sphere of entertainment.

The site was maintained at watercoolergames.org from 2003-2009, where it was edited by myself and Gonzalo Frasca. It is now archived here in full.

Game studies on the other coast

I'm happy to announce that I'll be joining the faculty at Georgia Tech this fall, continuing my work on game criticism and game rhetoric in the context of their IDT program.

As Michael Mateas mentions today, we'll look forward to taking on the Copenhagen ITU for the title of "the hub of game studies." But don't worry, since Gonzalo and I both blog here on WCG, it will be friendly, like a match of Super Monkey Ball ;).

Friends in Southern California, get in touch with me soon so we can meet up or get together before I leave.

Congratulations! I'll be looking forward to reading all about it.

That's great!

Have you lived on the east coast before, or the southeast for that matter? I spend some of my growing-up years in North Carolina and Florida, and have an affinity for that part of the country. Don't get too hooked on the sweet ice tea, it's addictive.

Thanks!

I've lived in NY city and state, So. Cal, Paris, and a few other places. However, my wife is from Memphis (we were married there) and my in-laws live in the mid-south, so we're pretty culturally contextualized... BIG ice tea glasses and lots of A/C.

Congrats, Ian! That's great!

Great news Ian :) We'll toast to your new job in San Jose!

Sure, let's do that toast at GDC!

Btw, about the title of "hub of game studies", well, it'll be a tough fight. Let's put our monkeys in the balls and let's roll! :)

Definitely let's have a drink or seven at GDC. I'll look forward to seeing you all there.

Anyone else who will be at GDC, let me (or us) know and we can meet up.
