Water Cooler Games served as the web's primary forum for "videogames with an agenda" — coverage of the uses of video games in advertising, politics, education, and other everyday activities, outside the sphere of entertainment.
The site was maintained at watercoolergames.org from 2003-2009, where it was edited by myself and Gonzalo Frasca. It is now archived here in full.
CNET just published an article on High-Tech Workouts, including favorites like DDR, Yourself Fitness, the EyeToy, Cateye Game Bike, the Powergrid KiloWatt, and the new Nintendo Bongo peripheral due out next year.
William Huber and I had a go at both the Game Bike and the KiloWatt at E3 this year, and we were both very impressed with the latter, and not so impressed with the former. The Game Bike does get your heartrate going, but it instilled a negative relationship with the game -- I wanted to stop using it. The KiloWatt provides an isometric workout, for strength-building, and after only a few minutes on it I could feel it working. Unlike the Game Bike, the KiloWatt actually improved the game experience. As William said,
The KiloWatt is still pretty expensive (~$500 for the consumer-grade model) and you have to make room for it in your house. For now, I'm sticking to DDR (which I'll return to once I get my new den put together). Here's a tip for DDR workout wannabes: get two dance mats. Playing with your significant other builds camaraderie, leverages natural competition to improve the exercising, and cuts down the total daily workout time, since you can both play at once.
I'll definitely pick up the bongo controller too, but I'm not sure it could even provide an aerobic workout. As the writers at CNET said, "any activity is better than zoning out on the La-Z-Boy, right?"
