Water Cooler Games served as the web's primary forum for "videogames with an agenda" — coverage of the uses of video games in advertising, politics, education, and other everyday activities, outside the sphere of entertainment.

The site was maintained at watercoolergames.org from 2003-2009, where it was edited by myself and Gonzalo Frasca. It is now archived here in full.

Knight News Game Award

Games for Change has announced plans to offer the Knight News Game Award at the 2009 Sixth Annual Games for Change Festival in May of this year. Here are the criteria from the website:

Our definition of a news game - A digital game which is journalistic: it enhances people's ability to make decisions in a democracy. Our criteria for the Knight News Game Award:

A good news game does one or all of the following well:
  • Uses fact-based or reality-based news and information to help people make decisions
  • In its role as an investigative reporting tool, it exposes an unknown logic or new information, it acts as a system that uncovers a truth about a current event or issue
  • It provides editorial or commentary on a current event or issue
  • It clarifies or explains a current event or issue
  • It is a well-designed game with meaningful gameplay

Entries are being accepted online until March 30.
