Water Cooler Games served as the web's primary forum for "videogames with an agenda" — coverage of the uses of video games in advertising, politics, education, and other everyday activities, outside the sphere of entertainment.
The site was maintained at watercoolergames.org from 2003-2009, where it was edited by myself and Gonzalo Frasca. It is now archived here in full.
24 Hour Fitness and Konami have reached an agreement to put Dance Dance Revolution in the former's Kids' Clubs. According to the release, Konami will also offer coupon for a 30 day pass to any 24 Hour Fitness with new bundles of Dance Dance Revolution.
Westerners may not realize it, but Konami actually owns and operates a chain of health clubs in Japan, so they've been very aware of the relationship between fitness centers and their games. This may be the company's first foray into the North American health club market, however.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I find the idea of a Kids Club in a health club a bit creepy. It turns out it's basically daycare/babysitting while mom or dad works out. So, the partnership may be less health-oriented and more marketing-oriented. But even if exercise does go on in the Kids Club, why the assumption that DDR is kids stuff? All the evidence seems to suggest that adults are playing just as much or more for exercise. The cognitive dissonance of DDR play has to be lower for adults than kids, or at least older kids/preteens, especially in a strange public setting.
