Water Cooler Games
Water Cooler Games served as the web's primary forum for "videogames with an agenda" — coverage of the uses of video games in advertising, politics, education, and other everyday activities, outside the sphere of entertainment.

The site was maintained at watercoolergames.org from 2003-2009, where it was edited by myself and Gonzalo Frasca. It is now archived here in full.

Spring Break Fallujah

A morbid little game/cartoon, Spring Break Fallujah comments on the rumors of another US military draft. I've played about a dozen times now, and from what I can tell this is another example of the "rhetoric of failure" type of "game."

I played the game about 10 times, but did not feel like posting about it, since I could only assume that it was one of those "rhetoric of failure" games. It was certainly confusing, but on the other hand I really wished for the game to be complex. It is not easy to create a game that draws on "whatever you do you are doomed". In this case, it is particularly bad crafted because you do not see the source of your attack. Had you seen somebody shooting at you, a grenade being sent at you or a person detonating itself, the situation would have been different. Sadly, as it is right now, the game is only confusing and I doubt that anybody but serious games scholars would have tried it so many times as we did. I guess we can learn a lot both from successful and not so succcessful political games. This one, while well intended, fails to deliver.

Agreed. Were you able to use the objects in the Hum-Vee cab to any effect? I could drag the radio and grenade around, but couldn't determine if I could do anything with them.

Well of course you're not going to be able to do anything with any of the items. See, the "game" is not actually a game, it's a slightly interactive flash presentation making a comment on the draft. The point is supposed to be that no matter what the circumstances are, you're pretty much fucked and are going to die. Also, you don't need to see your attacker if it's a land mine or some such, and you need to do is drive over it (which your vehicle apparently does). You don't have long enough to live to really need to do anything with the stuff in your car because you're still fucked in less than 5 seconds. I mean, seriously, what're you going to do, press the call button on the radio so someone somewhere else can hear you die?
