Water Cooler Games served as the web's primary forum for "videogames with an agenda" — coverage of the uses of video games in advertising, politics, education, and other everyday activities, outside the sphere of entertainment.

The site was maintained at watercoolergames.org from 2003-2009, where it was edited by myself and Gonzalo Frasca. It is now archived here in full.

Ubisoft to publish US Election Game
by Ian Bogost June 2, 2004

The Political MachineThis just in, Ubisoft has announced that it will publish The Political Machine, "a new game for PCs that puts players in control of the 2004 presidential campaigns of either incumbent U.S. President George W. Bush or Democratic challenger, Sen. John Kerry." From the release:

Players will also have the option of creating their own Republican or Democratic candidate or managing the campaign of a historical figure like Ronald Reagan or Franklin Roosevelt. The game will allow players to raise funds, barnstorm for votes and join candidate debates.

From what I can tell, it sounds like a turn-based strategy game. There's more detailed information and screenshots on the game's website. Seems like election sims are a pretty crowded marketplace this year, but it's notable to see this release from a major publisher.
