Yet another US Election Game
by Ian Bogost June 3, 2004
categories: Political Games

President Forever: 2004 is the latest US Election Sim to cross my path. By my count, that brings the total to four this year: Frontrunner, The Political Machine, Power Politics III, and President Forever: 2004.

I'm working on an "indy" election/campaign game, and I'm happy to say that it doesn't contain a single map of the US, no lists of issues, and no Republicans or Democrats. But it will have minigames. I'll have a preview soon.

Great news! Be sure to tell us when it's ready.

Which game is supposed to be the best of the 4?

We had a discussion about this on the Serious Games listserv. The real answer is, we don't know yet. Three of the games aren't released.

I'll see if I can post some of those comments here.

Another one for you:

It's an online and wireless game whereupon you can administer retribution on Blair and Bush by way of a boxing glove, frying pan or cricket bat.

Mark -- thanks for this. I'll post it up in a top-level entry soon.

Touching the State痴 user research raised the issue that potential voters often don稚 feel they have an objective source of...

I actually recently bought Frontrunner and found it to be lacking. The first time I played, I played on Normal, without reading the instructions, dived right in and made a "Far Left" nominee, I went the farthest I was allowed for everything and won handidly. I then made a far right nominee... actually basically, I was Bush.. this is as far right as it seemed I could go, and would easily. I played another game on normal, more centrist, won... then I played on hard as a far left and won every state, except one. Far too easy. The game is also over very quickly.

I downloaded the demo of President Forever after my experience with Front Runner and will be purchasing it. It isn't as simple as Front Runner and it doesn't seem that I'll be able to win with little to no effort.

Thanks for the info! Sounds like you're a fan of these games. If you want to post further reviews of any of these games, let me know and we'll make room for them here.

We've JUST (a week ago) started a site dedicated to just that - it's nice to see we're not alone. If you have the time, please have a look at what we're doing and send your feedback. We'll be posting new stuff every week.

Thanks!
